Fiji podría cambiar su bandera e himno

Fiji's coup-installed government is considering changing the country's national anthem and flag.

Fiji has been ruled by army leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama since a coup in December 2006 ousted the democratically elected government of Laisenia Qarase.

Bainimarama has since taken aim at what he believes is divisions in the country between indigenous and Indian Fijians.

The National Council for Building a Better Fiji (NCBBF), a group chaired by Bainimarama, is considering changing the flag to make it less reflective of British rule, a report in the Fiji Times newspaper says.

Fiji's national anthem would also be altered to have parts sung in English, Hindi and Fijian.

There was lack of initiative during independence from British rule in 1970, which prevented a change to the anthem and flag design.

Fiji's flag currently has a union jack in the top left corner on a light blue background and a coat of arms.
